'Had to see a therapist after breakup with Johnny Depp', says Winona Ryder

In a new interview, Winona Ryder opened up about how her breakup with Johnny Depp in 1993 affected her mental health. She said that she wasn't able to take care of herself.

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s trial was one of the most talked-about events this year. Lots of revelations happened and several names cropped up as the trial went on. Ultimately, Johnny won the defamation case against Amber. Though the case is now over, Johnny’s love life took center stage, yet again. This time, his ex-girlfriend Winona Ryder has opened up about her split with the actor, and how it messed up her mental health. The Stranger Things star said that she had to see a therapist after her breakup since she wasn't taking care of herself.

WINONA RYDERS ON HER BREAKUP WITH JOHNNY DEPP

In a recent interview, Winona Ryders addressed how her breakup with Johnny Depp affected her all those years ago. In the late 80s and early 90s, the duo was engaged to each other for three years before their breakup in 1993. They first met at the premiere of Great Balls of Fire! in 1989 when she was 17 and he was 26.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Winona talked about how the breakup and intense media spotlight affected her. She said, “That was my Girl, Interrupted real life,” referring to her 1999 film about a girl in a mental asylum. The actress added, “I remember, I was playing this character, who ends up getting tortured in a Chilean prison (in the 1994 film The House of the Spirits). I would look at these fake bruises and cuts on my face (during the shoot), and I would struggle to see myself as this little girl. ‘Would you be treating this girl like you’re treating yourself?’ I remember looking at myself and saying, ‘This is what I’m doing to myself inside.’ Because I just wasn’t taking care of myself.”

Winona added that her 1993 film The Age of Innocence’s co-star Michelle Pfeiffer noticed it. “I remember Michelle being like, ‘This is going to pass.’ But I couldn’t hear it. I’ve never talked about it. There’s this part of me that’s very private. I have such, like, a place in my heart for those days. But for someone younger who grew up with social media, it’s hard to describe,” she said. The actor credits an ‘incredible therapist’ who helped her through it.

JOHNNY DEPP AND WINONA RYDERS' LOVE STORY

It was love at first sight for Johnny Depp when he saw Winona Ryders. The duo dated for a period of four years. In fact, Johnny also has a 'Winona' tattoo, which he had modified after they broke up. The duo’s relationship made headlines in the 90s. Fans and paps would not leave a moment to capture them whenever spotted in public. Four years later, things ended on an amicable note for them and, later in interviews, both had only nice things to say about each other.

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder met at a New York City film premiere in 1989, where the former fell in love with her. Speaking to Rolling Stone in 1991, this is how Johnny had described his first encounter with Winona. He said, “It was a classic glance, like the zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets foggy.” Little before they knew, Johnny and Winona were not only dating but had even gotten engaged within five months of courtship. They also shared screen space in the 1990 blockbuster Edward Scissorhands and the rest is history.
